This macaque took a camera in 2011 and took some selfies. The photographer, David Slater who it belonged to wanted “his” copyright in the pictures to be recognised worldwide. Enter PETA who brought a claim seeking to recognise that the copyright vests with the macaque monkey. A judge in San Francisco said no… while recognising that animal rights and welfare does have legal recognition, the judge was of the view that this did not extent to the US Copyright Act. “Only in America” is the phrase that comes to mind…… but maybe that’s just too simplistic.
